I am originally from a small town in New Jersey where I spent my younger years emersed in nature-from the pine barrens to the hills of north Jersey. Another trip I used to love to take is down the farm roads in southern Jersey. Nature has always been a major focus and a grounding force for me and between writing, photography and painting it has always been part of me.
In the past I attempted to capture nature and the way I felt within it, the peaceful, the quiet and thoughtful moments spent in the woods or by the ocean. These aspects often appeared in my poetry and writing as well as photography. Over the years I have had the desire to capture accurately the intricacies of nature but it has grown to a focus on water and light. I strive to capture the multiple layers of water-the reflection, the light play on the surface and the ability to see the shadows beneath the surface. One of my early inspirations was an old steel rain barrel-I was always taken by the leaves rising and falling like ghosts and the vivid colors of the light and shadow that always changed beneath the surface.
Something that strengthened my desire to capture water was a wonderful trip to the cascades in New Hampshire, the sounds, the movement of water and the play of light made me want to seek out water images all the more. I actually began building waterfalls in my house-small displays in tanks that captured small pieces of nature and contained the sound that I fell in love with on that trip to the cascades.
Another aspect of my art is the mysteriousness of life and nature. The awkward moments in the shadows-the discomfort of feeling small in an immense background that is indifferent to our existence. I enjoy the haunted feeling of a walk by the cemetery as the sun goes down or the emptiness of a field where the clouds are conspiring in the distance, The quiet whispers of light in a chasm-the feelings of awkwardness we usually ignore. I am enthralled by the intangible feeling of darkness and shadow and the moments we don’t feel quite safe, a strong feeling I have explored in words and images.
In the last twenty or so years I have lived in Texas and have continued to seek out places in nature to inspire me. I consider myself and my son explorers always looking for out of the way places to discover. With every trip I get more images to paint and have a studio filled with paintings at different points of progress. In recent years I have begun enlarging my scope of art including dreamscapes, poetry and images that capture more than simply the landscape-capturing the elements of nature that are more intangible and inspiring.
